Eaton Publications of Interest Charles Aubrey Eaton, an outstanding member of the Nova Scotia branch of the Eaton family, who died in 1953, is the subject of a 175 page biography entitled "Prophet in the House," written by Rev. Ronald Miller and published in 1993 by The Community Church Press of Chicago. The book is presently available from the International Council of Community Churches website at www.iccuse.com for $5.00. Click on "Community Church Press," then on "Publications for Sale." The website contains an order form that can be downloaded and mailed. "During his religious career, beginning in 1898, Dr. Eaton led congregations at some of North America's most prominent Baptist churches, in Toronto, Cleveland, and New York City. He published several books on inspirational subjects, and also worked occasionally as a foreign correspondent for several important North American newspapers. When he eventually moved full time into writing and journalism, it was as editor-in-chief of Leslie's Illustrated Monthly. He also went into business, as a industrial relations advisor for General Electric Company, and as a dairy farmer in Plainsfield, New Jersey. Finally, entering politics, he was elected in 1925 as Congressional Representative for the 4th New Jersey District, and served continuously in the House of Representatives until his death in 1953.Rev. Miller's biography gives the reader precious insight into Charles Eaton's early life, particularly the poverty and hardship he had to endure as a boy and young man in a rural community in Nova Scotia. It documents his education, his growing moral stature under the pressure of family difficulties, and his confrontations with the challenges of maturity, such as choosing a system of beliefs and an occupation he could live by. The author, who studied Theology and History at Rutgers University in New Jersey, gives his most throrough consideration to Dr. Eaton's political career, particularly with regard to how it offered a natural opportunity to extend and expand upon themes that dominated his work as preacher and writer. His book, which is based on an academic thesis for the MA degree, transcends the merely inspirational category, and qualifies as a genuine work of scholarship. Never dry or uninteresting, however, it will repay reading by almost anyone interested in the Eaton family's history and its contribution to modern civilization." ---Garry Eaton ![]() This 750-page work is now being published by: We extend our hearty congratulations to Dr. Converse!
